MAN OF THE MOMENT
Why is Patna crying for this cop?
Bihar’s capital erupted in protests when Shivdeep Waman Lande, the city SP, got transfer orders. Lovelorn SMSes followed
Pooja Kashyap | TNN

Before he was suddenly transferred, Patna city SP Shivdeep Waman Lande received an average of 300 SMSes every day, mostly from love-struck girls, some even carrying marriage proposals. On the day of his transfer, the number of SMSes crossed almost 2,000. There was more to come. The heartburn soon translated into candlelight marches and mass protests demanding the cancellation of the IPS officer’s transfer.

Why did the people of Patna almost sink into depression when they found out that Lande was moving out? Many say it was the 2006-batch officer’s ‘Dabangg’-like style of functioning, proactive policing and strictness in dealing with the high and mighty that made him a rockstar in the city in just 10 months of his brief tenure. What added to the adulation was his clean image, making him an idol for the youth.

Now, with his departure, many are worried. “You never know. All the ills might start returning to the city,” says Randhir Sahay, an octogenarian who reveres the young cop.

With people taking to the streets to stop his transfer, the state police HQ had to step in to explain that the move was in the interest of Lande’s career as he was the only one among his batchmates yet to handle a district independently. The protests ended only after CM Nitish Kumar, in response to a query from newsmen, offered a similar-worded reply to justify Lande’s exit.

Meanwhile, the man himself, sporting trademark blade shades, is unassuming about his popularity. “I used to respond to almost 400 calls daily and tried my best to redress their grievances. It helped build peoples’ trust in the police. They knew action would be taken if they call me,” he says. His 24x7 availability on phone and promptness in saving damsels in distress also earned the Maharashtrian the sobriquet of ‘Singham’.

Lande became an overnight reallife hero after an incident of attempted molestation involving a girl and three drunks in the heart of the city. The girl called him up for help (almost every college girl had his mobile number), and Lande landed at the spot within minutes. The girl was rescued while the molesters absconded, only to be captured by Lande’s team within a week.

It was this accessibility that made him every girl’s dream man. When he was not rescuing fair maidens, Lande was cracking down on spurious drugs, pirated DVDs, cosmetics and spurious edible items.

He is also remembered by Patna locals for reining in speed buffs performing stunts in the middle of the roads. “If he spotted any biker with a long mane, he would waste no time in relieving him of that as well,” says college student and ardent Lande fan Rajni Rai.

The tough cop, who follows a strict three-hour exercise regimen, has a softer side as well. He donates 60% of his pay to the Yuvak Sangathan, an organization that he founded. It organizes social activities like mass marriages of poor girls and free coaching classes for the less privileged.

Despite the accolades, life for this engineering graduate had not been easy. The son of a farmer, he studied throughout on scholarships. That, he says, sharpened his killer instinct, “helping me survive and thrive.”

It’s not surprising then that parents and their daughters are making the 8-hour journey from Patna to his new office in Araria with marriage proposals. But the girls will have to wait. Blushing just a bit, he says, “I have no marriage plans for now.”

Perched on bikes, young officers sport shades of style inspired by Chulbul Pandey & Shivdeep Lande
Patna, March 6: The legend of Chulbul Pandey aka Salman Khan’s antics as a brave and fearless cop in the Bollywood flick Dabangg seems to have caught the imagination of probationary sub-inspectors in Patna. They began by sporting slim and trim moustaches.
Now, taking cue from the new City superintendent of police (SP), Shivdeep Lande, the probationary sub-inspectors have started zipping around on their motorcycles wearing cool sunglasses.
Of course, Lande has got nothing to do with Chulbul but then the junior officers, with their sunglasses and bikes, swear by both.
However, the new style statement of the junior officers has raised the eyebrows of a few other officers who claim that the probationary sub-inspectors are concentrating too much on style rather than carrying out their duties sincerely.
“It is hot and sunny and getting humid with each passing day. So sunglasses are a must. Donning shades is not bad or unlawful. Aur uniform ke saath acchha lagta hai(And they complement the uniform),” said a probationary sub-inspector.
Another probationary sub-inspector had a different take on the issue.
“The movie has ushered a fresh style statement long after Amitabh Bachchan made the police uniform immortal in ZanjeerAur abhi to hamare sahib bhi sunglass lagate hai.(And now even our boss wears the sunglasses). He looks very nice and we are just inspired by him. This in no way affects our job. We are police officers and we take our job very serio- usly,” another serious looking probationary sub-inspec- tor said.
At present, around 100 probationary sub-inspectors are posted at different police stations of the state capital.
These junior officers work everywhere, they assist investigations in the police stations, man the anti-rash driving cell, help regulate traffic and check vehicles apart from doing office-related work.
Once they complete their year-long probation period, they are made sub-inspectors and then posted at different police stations.
“We definitely take care of the decency level. It is not that we go around hanging the sunglass in the back of the uniform collar as Salman Khan’s character does inDabangg. Then what is wrong in wearing them the proper way? Our City SP looks dashing wearing them. We are always serious about our duties just as he is,” said another cop.
The sunglass factor though is not going down well with some officers.
“The probationary sub-inspectors need to be serious as they are under a year’s training. Many a time, the probationary sub-inspectors forget the basics and we have to keep on repeating the same things. Some people have also complained about probationary sub-inspectors being rude. They should stop wearing the sunglasses and concentrate. This is not a fashion show. The senior officers are entitled to do it as they have toiled hard to achieve things in life. But probationary sub-inspectors are yet to start their career even,” a senior officer said.
Earlier, there have been some cases of probationary sub-inspectors landing on the wrong side of the law.
On December 29 last year, two policemen, an assistant sub-inspector and a probationary sub-inspector got into an altercation before exchanging blows at the busy Govind Mitra Road under Pirbhore police station. The public gaped at the two policemen while they hurled abuses at each other and fought.
On January 10 this year, a probationary sub-inspector allegedly beat up a shopke- eper of Hari Nivas under Kotwali police station. The local businessmen blocked the road in protest. The Patna police headquarters suspended Deepak Kumar, the probationary sub-inspector concerned.
“Wearing sunglasses is nothing wrong but then if they are being worn with an uniform, these young officers should be aware of their responsibilities. They should know that the public looks up to them. They should draw criticism for their actions,” another police officer said.

The Good Cop of Patna

Why Bihar’s capital loves a police officer straight out of Dabangg
Everyone loves a good cop. From first-benchers whistling the roof down at the sight of Chulbul Pandey to young damsels in real-life distress. Patna found one with a double-barrelled name this year, and was loath to let him go. So when Shivdeep Waman Lande, Patna city superintendent of police, was transferred to the remote Araria district last month, protests erupted on streets, conspiracy theories buzzed in government offices, and even chief minister Nitish Kumar had to swat away pesky questions.
In the nine months he was in Patna, Shivdeep Lande was the perfect “light, camera, action cop”. The uniform was a tad too tight, the better to show off the beefy body, and the dark glasses always on — it didn't take too long for newspapers and fans to make the Dabangg connection. He knew how to play the game, and would ensure that the cameras were trained on him whenever he stepped out for a big catch, whether it was against fake cosmetics or the medicine mafia.
The people loved him for the less important assignments, and there's even a Facebook fan page on him. Women students of Magadh Mahila College and Patna Women’s College, who faced crank calls and harassment, called him up for help. Lande came up with an idea — he would ask the girls to divert their calls to his number. The young men who called found Lande on the phone, and quickly pressed “end-call”. The ones brave enough to call back would hear the SP again: “Beta, abhi bhi nahi sudhre ho, FIR karba du kya?” During festivals, he rounded up flashy bikes to stop rash young men from “fooling around” girls' colleges. Girls on scooters, on the other hand, had a free run of pandals. The grateful young women would line up to get his autograph, and flood his inbox with SMSes. “I also tried to follow up my action by turning up at Magadh Mahila College to deal with such boys. I did reprimand some publicly and slapped some around. But I also ensured no case was lodged against them,” he says. Lande has the right back story for a Bollywood happy ending. He is the son of a farmer in Akola, Maharashtra, and has struggled his way to his current success.
He dismisses all suggestions that he was inspired by Salman Khan or Ajay Devgn. “I have been wearing goggles since I was on probation in Munger.” His glasses are lucky for him. “Twice, on anti-Naxal operations, I met with accidents but did not get hurt. On both occasions, I was wearing my glasses,” he said. The Araria SP has a suitable one-liner to sign off with: “I am neither Dabangg nor Singham, my parents have named me Shivdeep”.

SP Lande Transferred; Protest in Patna

Patna: The rather sudden and premature transfer of City Superintendent of Police (SP) Shivdeep Lande to Araria has left Patna'ites scratching their heads in bewilderment and disappointment as several students' groups on Wednesday took out rallies against the government's decision while also demanding the withdrawal of his transfer order.
Activists under the banner of All India Students' Federation (AISF) blasted the state government for removing Lande from Patna where the SP, with his unique policing style, kept the counterfeiters, eve-teasers, parlor operators, and traffic violators at bay.
"Just when you thought that Patna was becoming safer under the dynamic leadership of Sir Lande, the government removed him from the city. This reeks of corruption and nepotism at the highest level and his transfer must be investigated so truth could come out before the public," said the protestors who also burnt an effigy of the Nitish government on Boring Road for issuing such order.
College girls were equally disappointed by the sudden turn of events.
"Sir Lande had become an iconic figure among the college girls in Patna. He not only responded to our phone calls whenever we were in trouble but also went after the eve-teasers in a ruthless way. Now we feel that we are not safe again anymore," said a JD Women's College student.
Dozens of girls, distraught by the news of Lande's transfer, arrived at his residence on Wednesday morning and urged him to stay in Patna. Lande, while assuring the girls that they had nothing to fear in the state capital, expressed his inability in satisfying their demand due to orders from the top.
Impressed by his style and conviction, girls were eager to get Lande's autograph to which the SP obliged them with patience and respect.
Lande, a 2006-batch officer, had arrived in Patna earlier this year.
Even Magadh Mahila College Principal Dr. Dolly Sinha sounded rather disappointed when she said that the students would definitely miss him as he had made them feel safe from the anti-social elements.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Abhayanand said that Lande had to be transferred on 'technical grounds' – an argument that no one is buying.
Describing it as a promotion of sort for Lande, the DGP said that in Araria, the former Patna SP would be able to work independently as opposed to working under the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Patna.
Abhayanand also said that Lande's position will not be filled as the City SP of East and West Patna were capable of handling central part of the city as well.

Shivdeep Lande shines again, arrests 3 quacks for illegal surgery

Ex- Patna SSP and currently SP of Araria, Shivdeep Lande  has shown his efficient working ability by arresting 3 quacks performing illegal Tubectomy in Araria District. The Quacks (Fake Doctors )have been said to have performed the surgery of 61 women in 2 hours only. The tubectomy operations were carried out in a field and without the use of anaesthesia
The three quacks have been identified as Gopal Jha, Prakash Jha and Ramanand Jha  performing under the banner of an NGO Jai Ambe Welfare Society. The NGO had promised women a sum of Rs 600 and other benefits if they came for surgery.
“When I reached the spot I was surprised to find that not a single qualified doctor was present there and even the saline bottles used for the surgery were well past their expiry dates,”  Lande said.
The quacks got down to business by performing the surgeries at breakneck speed without the benefit of anesthesia, making the women cry out in agony.  When the condition of several women deteriorated, the villagers rushed to the district police. The affected women have been rushed to the District Hospital.
